Dataset Description

The Contractor Details dataset is published monthly and contains a list of pharmacy and appliance contractors includes contractors for England, Wales, Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney. The list of contractors is based on information attached to NHS geographies, such as Regions and Integrated Care Board (ICBs) as of the published month.

Community pharmacies who submit FP10PCD forms require a private controlled drug account number which should be used when submitting these forms. This account number should also be used for submitting CD requisition forms and is a different account to the NHS account number used by contractors to submit NHS prescriptions. Contractors indicated as 'Private - NHS Prescription Services only' captures private prescribing information for controlled drugs Schedule 2 and 3 (Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001) for information purposes.

In December 2024, this dataset was updated to include the additional fields of Region, Region code, Health and Wellbeing Board (HWB) code and name, Local Pharmaceutical Committee (LPC) code, LPC name, Dispenser Account Type, Contractor Type, and flags for Distance Selling, 100-hours Pharmacies, Out-of-Hours Dispensers and LPS.

These enhancements aim to streamline access to information and reduce the volume of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests as the newly included fields are frequently sought through such requests. The expanded dataset now provides a more comprehensive overview of contractor details.

This data was previously published on the NHSBSA Information Services Portal prior to November 2023. Changes have been made to the data since migration to the Open Data Portal and you can read about these changes in the Contractor Details migration changes.

Data Collection

The dataset is provided from Primary Care Support England (PCSE) to the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) for the operational purpose of reimbursing and remunerating dispensing contractors for the costs of supplying drugs and devices, and providing essential and advanced services, to NHS patients.

Time Period

Monthly files containing data from July 2022 onwards.

Geography

Includes contractors for England, Wales, Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney.

Caveats

Data is as accurate as the data held by the NHSBSA data warehouse at the time of publishing each month. Total figures may not agree month to month due to openings and closures resulting in pharmacies changing group size or where backdated amendments are made.

The 100 hour flag indicates that the pharmacy was originally established as 100hour contract. These pharmacies may now operate between 72-100 hours per week.

Please note that HWB boards are only assigned to the information we hold on BSA databases at the time of publishing, currently we do not hold information of this kind for Private or Out of Hours Contractors, neither do we hold this for Contractors outside of England.

NHS and Private will have a unique ‘F-Code’ account, however, typically the same address will be present.

The Contractor Details reflects Contractors who were open on the last day of the time period provided.
