Coming soon: Dispensing data published on the Open Data Portal
10 June 2025In the coming weeks, we will migrate the publishing of three Dispensing datasets from the Dispensing contractors' data | NHSBSA onto the Open Data Portal (ODP):
- Dispensing Doctors and Personally Administered Drugs and Appliances (PADM) report
- Practice prescribing dispensing data
- Pharmacy and Appliance Contractors report
What will be published?
- Dispensing Doctors and PADM report: a monthly dataset that details prescriptions dispensed and/or personally administered within dispensing or prescribing doctor practices. This report shows the volume of activity that occurred from English dispensing practices only and includes the number of items and professional fees.
- Practice prescribing dispensing data: a monthly dataset on prescriptions issued by practices in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Isle of Man, that were dispensed in England. The report provides details on the practices’ prescribing origin, as well as information on the dispensing contractor. It also highlights the number of occasions where prescription items have travelled through the Electronic Prescribing Service (EPS).
- Pharmacy and Appliance Contractors report: a monthly dataset detailing the volume of activity that occurred from prescriptions and services dispensed in England. Data provided is based on England community dispensing only and may include items prescribed in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the Isle of Man which have been dispensed in England.
Why it will be published?
Our dispensing data supports a range of users, including healthcare professionals, policymakers, and researchers to provide a more comprehensive view of patient care and prescribing impacts.
We aim to improve visibility into prescribing and dispensing practices, ensuring that healthcare professionals are held accountable for prescribing decisions through publishing this data. This initiative supports our strategic goal to promote transparency in healthcare services and the responsible use of public resources across the NHS.
Furthermore, migrating the datasets to the ODP improves usability and centralises NHSBSA reporting information.
