Thank you for your request for information about the following:
‘1) What is the number of people who have logged a Covid-19 vaccine damage claim by type of Covid-19 vaccine?
2) Can you give a breakdown of how many claims are related to the death of another person (on behalf of someone who died as a result of the Covid-19 vaccine) and how many were requested by individuals who were left severely disabled by the Covid-19 vaccine?
Your request was received on 23rd February 2023 and I am dealing with it under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
Response
All data is as of 6 March 2023, and relates to claims received by the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) and those transferred from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) on 1 November 2021. All figures provided below relate to COVID-19 vaccinations:
-
We have received 4017 claims related to a COVID-19 vaccine. We do not collect data about vaccine manufacturer as part of the claim process as this is not a requirement of the scheme.
The independent medical assessor reviews a claimant’s full medical records and prepares a report which is than shared with the claimant along with the outcome of their claim. At this stage in the process we do hold information about vaccine manufacturer. We are therefore only able to disclose data about vaccine manufacturer for claims where the independent medical assessment has been concluded and the outcome has been communicated to the claimant. Of 1,013 COVID-19 vaccine related claims where an outcome has been communicated to the claimant, 622 were AstraZeneca vaccine, 348 were Pfizer vaccine and 43 Moderna vaccine. Please be advised that not all these claims were successful and it is therefore not possible to confirm whether the COVID-19 vaccine caused severe disablement.

We have received 4017 claims related to a COVID-19 vaccine. Of these claims, 334 relate to a claimant who has died.
All claims relate to disability. The Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme provides a one-off tax free payment, currently £120,000, to successful applicants where, on very rare occasions, a vaccine has caused severe disablement. To qualify for a Vaccine Damage Payment, an applicant therefore needs to establish that they meet two main criteria:
• on the balance of probabilities, the vaccine caused disability, and
• the resulting disablement is severe (60% or more)
