Thank you for your request for information about the following:

‘I’m requesting information relating to Covid-19 vaccine related liabilities. As of the time of reply,

  1. how many Covid-19 vaccine-related damages claims have been received by the NHS Business Services Authority (NHS BSA)?

  2. How many of these claims have been settled/denied?

  3. How long is it taking to send a claim for medical assessment (once all medical records are received)?

  4. How fast are claims which don't make the necessary medical assessment being denied?

  5. How much money has the NHS BSA spent in total on Covid-19 vaccine related liabilities so far?’

Your request was received on 13 September 2022 and I am dealing with it under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Response

All responses are as of 22 September 2022 and relate to COVID-19 vaccinations

  1. There have been 2,673 claims made to the Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme (VDPS).

  2. Of these, 114 claims have been notified of an outcome.

  3. On average, it takes 39 days to send a claim for medical assessment once all medical records have been received. The process of preparing claims to send for medical assessment is not straightforward and can take time. This involves organising and quality checking medical records to ensure that the medical assessor has all the required information to complete the medical assessment, ensuring the most appropriate outcome for the claimant.

  4. On average, claims not eligible for medical assessment due to not meeting the criteria for the scheme are rejected in 92 days. Claims that do not meet the criteria of the scheme would not be medically assessed. These have been rejected for a variety of reasons including:

• vaccines weren’t administered in the UK or Isle of Man

• duplicate claims

• withdrawn claims

5 The total amount paid out to date is £2,520,000.
