Request
Please can you tell me the following information for NHS Pension scheme.
(i) The current average time between retirement and receipt of the pension award
(ii) The proportion of people in the NHS Pension scheme who retired in May 2022 who received their pension award within 30 days of their retirement date
Response
As per the request, NHSBSA does not hold ‘retirement date’. The information held is ‘payable date’ – it is important to note that whilst this often incorporates the retirement date, it does not always.
i) The average number of days between the date NHS Pensions receive all relevant information, and the first payment being made, based on awards completed in June 2022 and July 2022 is 19. This is based on 10,591 members.
ii) Of the 5,335 members whose first payment was made in May 2022, 4,289 were within 30 days of the date that NHS Pensions received all relevant information.
For clarity, the above figures have no bearing on NHSP meeting its statutory requirements. Applications can be received months in advance, meaning that the days elapsed between the receipt of information and the data of payment can exceed 30 days.
