The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) received your request on 23 July 2025.

We have handled your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).

Our response

I can confirm that the NHSBSA holds the information you have requested and a copy of the information and notes explaining it is attached.

Please read the below notes to ensure correct understanding of the data.

Dependants and pension credit members are included in the above volumes, as are members who are now deceased and no longer in receipt of benefits.

Pension rate is based on what the active rate in payment was on 06 April 2024 and 06 April 2025 respectively. It does not necessarily mean the member was in receipt of that pension rate for the previous or subsequent 12 months, as rates can change throughout the year.

These volumes reflect the number of members with pensions in payment in the year in question; it isn’t necessarily the year the pension was put into payment, or the initial pension they were paid, it is an ongoing rolling figure. The member may not be in receipt of a pension in subsequent years, or the pension still be in payment today.

It doesn’t include lump sum payments made, only ongoing annual pension rates.

Members are counted once in each bracket based on the active pension rate in payment on the respective dates requested.

Practitioners are defined as any member with practitioner service; they may have also had concurrent officer service.
