Request
‘I am writing to make a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
Please could you provide details of how pension contributions are currently invested? Specifically:
-
A list of the companies, funds or sectors in which members' pension contributions are invested.
-
Information on any ethical investment policies or criteria that guide your investment decisions.
-
Whether you screen out companies involved in activities such as fossil fuel extraction, arms manufacturing, tobacco or other industries considered unethical by ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) standards
-
Any recent assessments or reviews of the ethical or ESG performance of your investment portfolio.
If possible, I would like to receive this information in digital format (such as PDF or spreadsheet).’
The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) received your request on 7 April 2025.
We have handled your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).
Our response
I am writing to advise you that following a search of our paper and electronic records, I have established that the information you requested is not held by the NHS Business Services Authority.
Advice and assistance
Please note the NHS Pension Scheme does not make investments. The following scheme guides are available on our website:

The scheme guides advise the following:
Pension Scheme Fund
The NHS Pension Scheme does not have an invested pension fund as per private sector pensions, but as a statutory scheme, benefits are fully guaranteed by the government.
Contributions from both members and employers are paid to the Exchequer, which meets the cost of Scheme benefits
