In May 2023 you provided me with a response to the following question [Ref: FoI-01037]:

Could you provide me with a similar table that is provided in the attachments but updated to include all the intervening years data that you have?

Could you also ensure that the figures in the table are set out so that it has three columns (i) £50,000 to £74,999, (ii) £75,000 to £99,999 and (iii) £100,000 plus, so ensuring that somebody with a pension of £100,000 plus only appears in that column and not all three.

This was clarified with the following:

When I say intervening years what I’d like is one for each year from 2016 onwards, and I’d like the data for just NHS pensioners in their own right.

Could you now provided me with an updated version of the table provided in that response to include a column for 2024 and 2025 if possible?

I can confirm that the NHSBSA holds the information you have requested and a copy of the information is attached.

Any dependants or pension credit members are excluded from the extract.

Pension rate is based on what the active rate in payment was at the Scheme year end (31/03) for each of the given years. It does not necessarily mean the member held that pension rate for the previous or subsequent 12 months, as rates can change throughout the year.

If a member ceased receiving benefits prior to the respective year end, they will not be counted in the results.

These volumes reflect the number of people in payment in the year in question; it isn’t necessarily the year the pensioners commenced pension, or the pension they were implemented with, it is an ongoing rolling figure. The members may not be in receipt of pension in subsequent years or still be in payment today.

It does not include lump sum payments made, only ongoing annual pension.

Members with a pension rate of less than £50,000 are out of scope for this response.

Members are counted once for each year in which they had an active pension rate.

Definitions

Pension Rate – The annual amount of pension due to the member at a given point in time. This is subject to change at any point throughout the year.
