Response
Some Information Not Held
Please note that we do not hold the following information relating to prescriptions:
Local authority, dosage, and condition being treated. In the case of local authority and condition, this information is not recorded on a prescription. Dosage is sometimes included by the prescriber, but this is not captured on our systems as this is not necessary for any purpose. Similarly, no data is captured relating to the clinical indication a prescription is intended for. We hold data on which drugs have been prescribed, but not the condition it was prescribed to treat.
Remaining Information
A copy of the information is attached.
Please read the below notes to ensure correct understanding of the data.
NHS Prescription Services process prescriptions for Pharmacy Contractors, Appliance Contractors, Dispensing Doctors and Personal Administration with information then used to make payments to pharmacists and appliance contractors in England for prescriptions dispensed in primary care settings (other arrangements are in place for making payments to Dispensing Doctors and Personal Administration). This involves processing over 1 billion prescription items and payments totalling over £9 billion each year. The information gathered from this process is then used to provide information on costs and trends in prescribing in England and Wales to over 25,000 registered NHS and Department of Health and Social Care users.
Exclusions
The Data excludes:
• Items not dispensed, disallowed and those returned to the contractor for further clarification.
• Prescriptions prescribed and dispensed in Prisons, Hospitals and Private prescriptions.
• Items prescribed but not presented for dispensing or not submitted to NHS Prescription Services by the dispenser.
• Items dispensed as part of a Pharmacy First service.
Data Source
The data source was the NHSBSA Information Services Data Warehouse.
Time Period
Data limited to November 2023 - November 2024 processing months.
Prescribed date
The prescribed date is only applicable to electronic (EPS) prescribing. The prescribed date for paper prescriptions has been set to the first day of the processing month. The SUBMISSION_TYPE field allows users to distinguish between EPS "real" dates and paper "artificial" ones. Note that for repeat dispensing, the date shown will be the prescription date for the first issue, and may appear out of range.
Organisation Data
The data provided is for prescriptions prescribed within a Sub-ICB Location (SICBL) within England.
The request includes multiple output .csv files, these are;
