Request
Hi, we are doing research on expanding our current services, and any information about the amount of claims for accommodation expenses from HSC students would be welcomed.
For example:
- Number of refund claims for accommodation (as in the number of claimants).
- Total sum (£) of claims for accommodation for the 23-24 Financial Year.
- If known, the number of claims which were for commercial stays (hotels/B&B’s at the higher rate up to £82.50), and the number for non-commercial at the lower rate of up to £37.50 (either the number or a % split).
- If you have it geographically, then the above amounts for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight specifically would be helpful.
Any other relevant information would be welcomed, such as whether the trend is upwards or downwards in recent years for the number of claims and their amounts.
This information could help to build a business case for saving the NHS money on accommodation reclaims.
The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) received your request on 8 July 2024.
On the 29 July 2024, you clarified your request as follows:
My understanding is that Placements for HSC students can be for many different types of courses, these are some examples we have been given by a couple of Universities:
BN and MN Nursing Adult
BN and MN Child
BN and MN Nursing Mental Health
BSc Operating dept practitioner
BSc Paramedic Science
BSc Diagnostic Radiography
MSc Physiotherapy
Bsc Midwifery
It is possible that there are others that we don’t know about – I don’t know whether you are able to identify these from a general “HSC” heading, so if you can’t, please just use this list, as I suspect this might be the vast majority. I guess some titles might vary slightly from Uni to Uni?
As regards LSF applicants, it is anyone who is claiming TDAE, and as this comes under LSF, then I assume that yes it will be.
Response
Question 1 and 2:
Number of refund claims for accommodation (as in the number of claimants).
Total sum (£) of claims for accommodation for the 23-24 Financial Year.
I can confirm that the NHSBSA holds the information you have requested and a copy of the information and notes explaining it is attached.
Please read the below notes to ensure correct understanding of the data.
The total for 2023-24 shows the number of individual students who made a claim for TDAE accommodation, along with the total number of claims received and the total expenditure for the 2023-24 financial year. This is then split by students claiming for the allowance under the NHS LSF scheme and the Student Bursary scheme.
The total is then split into amounts claimed at university level and course level for both schemes.
Please note that the university base may not provide an accurate location of where the placement occurred
Question 3:
If known, the number of claims which were for commercial stays (hotels/B&B’s at the higher rate up to £82.50), and the number for non-commercial at the lower rate of up to £37.50 (either the number or a % split).
Following a search of our paper and electronic records, I have established that the information you requested is not held by the NHS Business Services Authority. This is because it is not currently recorded on our systems.
Question 4:
If you have it geographically, then the above amounts for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight specifically would be helpful.
Following a search of our paper and electronic records, I have established that the information you requested is not held by the NHS Business Services Authority.

Alternatively, you to obtain specific placement details you may have to contact each of the universities in the catchment area to see if they're able to provide a list of placements available.
Any other relevant information would be welcomed, such as whether the trend is upwards or downwards in recent years for the number of claims and their amounts.
Please see attached an overview of TDAE expenditure from FY20/21 to 23/24.
Please note that the expenditure for the first year is low, as the NHS LSF scheme only launched in September 2020, so reimbursements were not available for the full financial year.
