Request
You asked us:
‘1) How many awards have been made from the VDPS that involve a death following a Covid 19 vaccine?
2) Of the awards I am aware that payments have been made for a fatality for the conditions Vasculitis and VITT . Have payments been made following a death for any other condition following a Covid 19 vaccine such as GBS?
3) How many of the awards paid following a Covid 19 vaccine involving a death are not for the condition VITT?’
The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) received your request on 11 May 2024.
We have handled your request under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000.
Our response
I can confirm that the NHSBSA holds the information you have requested.
All data as of 17 May 2024.
All data relates to claims received by the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) and those transferred from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) on 1 November 2021.
All figures provided relate to COVID-19 vaccines.
Question 1
64 awarded claims were submitted on behalf of someone who has died. However, this does not necessarily mean a COVID-19 vaccine caused the vaccinated person’s death. This number may include claims on behalf of a person whose cause of death was not related to the vaccine.
Question 2
The claimant can tell us what happened after vaccination on the claim form. At the medical assessment stage, the independent medical assessor provides a description of the assessed conditions they have been able to identify from the claimant's medical records. This can sometimes be a mixture of conditions. The condition recorded against each claim may therefore be different to the condition initially stated by the claimant on their original claim form. All data provided relates to the conditions listed by the independent medical assessor in the assessment report.
Vaccine Damage Payments have been awarded on behalf of someone who has died for the following conditions other than VITT/Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis:
Anaphylaxis
Guillain-Barre syndrome
Immune thrombocytopenia
Myocardial Infarction
Myocarditis/pericarditis
Pulmonary Embolus
Stroke/CVA
Other (including
Cause of death - acute allergic reaction
Bacterial pneumonia, immune response to vaccine, inflammation of lungs)
Question 3
