Request
I am after a spreadsheet that shows every pharmacy in the UK that is currently employing a pre-reg (trainee) pharmacist.
I will require the following columns:
Name of group
Name of pharmacy
Number of Pre-Regs situated in pharmacy
I would also prefer for the following to be included:
Foundation year training programme
Address
Contact information
Email address
Phone Number
If you could also make a similar spreadsheet for pharmacies that have taken a pre-reg in the past 2-3 years then that would be much appreciated.
On 16 May 2024 you clarified:
Yes you are correct. I intended for the foundation year training programme and which pharmacies are taking part in this programme currently (history not required)
By groups I meant pharmacy groups also indicated on the spreadsheet however this is not absolutely necessary
Sorry I also meant to ask if you could include the chosen foundation year training programme, e.g:
Buttercups
PreRegShortcuts
Etc
Response
I can confirm that the NHSBSA holds the information you have requested and a copy of the information is attached.
Please read the below notes to ensure correct understanding of the data.
Fewer than five
Please be aware that I have decided not to release the full details where the total number of individuals falls below five. This is because the individuals could be identified, when combined with other information that may be in the public domain or reasonably available. This information falls under the exemption in section 40 subsections 2 and 3 (a) of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). This is because it would breach the first data protection principle as:
a - it is not fair to disclose individual’s personal details to the world and is likely to cause damage or distress.
b - these details are not of sufficient interest to the public to warrant an intrusion into the privacy of the individual.

Breach of confidentiality
Please note that the identification of individuals is also a breach of the common law duty of confidence. An individual who has been identified could make a claim against the NHSBSA for the disclosure of the confidential information.
The information requested is therefore being withheld as it falls under the exemption in section 41(1) ‘Information provided in confidence’ of the Freedom of Information Act.

Remaining Information
NHS Prescription Services process prescriptions for Pharmacy Contractors, Appliance Contractors, Dispensing Doctors and Personal Administration with information then used to make payments to pharmacists and appliance contractors in England for prescriptions dispensed in primary care settings (other arrangements are in place for making payments to Dispensing Doctors and Personal Administration). This involves processing over 1 billion prescription items and payments totalling over £9 billion each year. The information gathered from this process is then used to provide information on costs and trends in prescribing in England and Wales to over 25,000 registered NHS and Department of Health and Social Care users.
Data Source
The data source was the NHSBSA Information Services Data Warehouse.
Dataset
This data shows the number of active placements for Foundation Trainee Pharmacists in English pharmacies. It is based on a snapshot taken on 29 May 2024. The data is taken from the latest declarations from pharmacies without any validation by the NHSBSA. It may change if back-dated declarations are made.
Time Period
All data as of 1 May 2024
Organisation
We only hold data for pharmacies in England.
Training programme
We do not hold any data about the chosen foundation year training programme. The Workforce Training and Education team at NHS England may hold more information. You can make a FOI request at the following link:
