Request
Are there any cases of Motor Neurone Disease associated with COVID vaccinations at present?
Response
The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) is not responsible for capturing data about suspected side effects to medicines or vaccines. The Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) collects this data through their Yellow Card reporting site.
However, we do administrate the Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme (VDPS). The VDPS provides a one-off tax-free payment to successful applicants where, on very rare occasions and on the balance of probabilities, a vaccine has been assessed to have caused severe disablement.
All data as of 15 February 2024. All data relates to VDPS claims received by the NHSBSA and those transferred from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) on 1 November 2021.
Each claim is assessed on a case-by-case basis by an independent medical assessor.
At the medical assessment stage, the independent medical assessor provides a description of the assessed conditions they have been able to identify from the claimant's medical records.
Where a claim relates to a COVID-19 vaccine, no claimants have been notified they are entitled to a Vaccine Damage Payment where Motor Neurone Disease is a listed condition.
