Thank you for your request for information about the following:

‘Under the Freedom on Information Act please can you tell me the total amount of compensation paid to date? Please also provide the total number of successful claims to date.’

Your request was received on 10 January 2024 and I am dealing with it under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Response

All data as of 10 January 2024. All data relates to claims received by the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) and those transferred from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) on 1 November 2021.

The Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme (VDPS) is not a compensation scheme. Claimants can still seek damages in court.

The VDPS provides a one-off tax-free payment, which is currently £120,000, to successful applicants where, on very rare occasions, a vaccine has caused severe disablement. A list of eligible vaccines is available at: www.gov.uk/vaccine-damage-payment/eligibility.

1,108 claimants have been notified that they are entitled to a Vaccine Damage Payment.

Of the 1,108 claimants that have been notified they are entitled to a Vaccine Damage Payment, 1,100 claimants have received their payment so far. Therefore, £93,710,000 has been paid to claimants. The remaining claimants will receive their Vaccine Damage Payment once we receive relevant documents from them. For example, their bank details.
