FOI-01535

Thank you for your request for information about the following:

The total number of recorded tooth extractions carried out on adults and children (under 18) by dentists in England and Wales for the most recent year you hold data for, and for five years and ten years prior to that year.

This should yield six figures, two for each year - one for adults and one for children. So for example, if the most recent complete year you hold data for is 2022, then the request would be for the total number of tooth extractions in England and Wales in 2022, 2017 and 2012, for both adults and children.

By 'tooth extractions' I mean the number of people who have had teeth extracted. So a person who has had more than one tooth extracted would count as a single tooth extraction. However, if you also have totals for the total number of teeth extracted in any given year then I would like that information too.

Your request was received on 6 November and I am dealing with it under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Guidance Notes

This report contains the details from General FP17s processed for the reporting years 2016/17 - 2023/24 (April 2023-October 2023) in England and Wales. The information within the report includes the data items and descriptions listed below.

Activity by Foundation Dentists is excluded.

Reporting Year: The financial year which the activity relates to.

Year-end methodology will include all activity data (including amendments) collected from FP17s scheduled in any of the fifteen schedule months from April to June, where the date of completion is on or between 1 April and 31 March of the year. For example, 2019/20 will include all activity data and amendments collected from FP17s scheduled in any of the fifteen schedule months from April 2019 to June 2020, where the date of completion is on or between 1 April 2019 and 31 March 2020. Where FP17s do not have a date of completion, for example, where the patient has failed to return to complete the treatment, the date of acceptance is used.

Country Name: This is the country the contract is located in.

Total FP17s: This is the number of FP17s and FP17Os scheduled including adjustments for amended and deleted FP17s. Withdrawn FP17s are not included in the total count of FP17s. This figure may be zero or negative if deleted FP17s have been processed.

FP17s with Extractions: This is the number of forms submitted where the Extractions box has been ticked on a FP17. This is based on the general clinical data set as recorded in part 5a of the FP17. A course of treatment can include several elements of the Community Dentist Service (CDS); therefore individual rates are expressed as a rate per 100 FP17s.

Extractions Rate: This is the number of forms submitted where the Extractions box has been ticked on a FP17 expressed as a rate per 100 FP17s.

Extractions (General) - Number of Teeth: This is the number of teeth where extractions were carried out, as entered in part 5a of the FP17.
