Coming soon: 700k Additional Urgent Dental Appointments dataset

27 June 2025

Data on the the government's initiative to provide 700,000 additional urgent dental care appointments in 2025/26 will soon be published on the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) Open Data Portal. The dataset will provide insights into how the initiative has performed at a national and local level.

What is the 700k Additional Urgent Dental Appointments initiative?

On 21 February 2025, the government announced plans to make available 700,000 additional urgent dental care appointments during the 2025/26 period. This initiative aims to deliver on the government’s manifesto pledge and enhance access to urgent dental services across England, addressing the significant unmet need in many regions.

Extra appointments will be available from April and have been targeted at ‘dental deserts’ - areas where patients particularly struggle to access NHS dentists.

What are we publishing?

The forthcoming data publication will serve to monitor and report on the progress towards the government’s target, ensuring transparency and accountability at both national and Integrated Care Board (ICB) level.

The dataset will provide:

  • Total number of additional urgent dental care appointments delivered
  • ICB-level progress tracking, showing performance against allocated targets.
  • Comparisons to baseline urgent care provision, to ensure growth beyond existing services.
  • Monthly updates, enabling ongoing monitoring and assessment.

Why are we publishing this data?

This publication will be used to monitor progress of the initiative and help evaluate whether each ICB has met its allocated share of the 700,000 additional appointments. It will prove essential in the evaluation of outcomes to determine if the initiative is meeting its goals and provide the evidence to policy makers, commissioners and local healthcare teams to support decision making.

Publishing data on the Open Data Portal will also enable transparency and allow for public accountability.
