Official Statistics
The dataset provides a monthly breakdown from July 2023 to October 2025 of dental activity carried out by dentists on behalf of the NHS in England. The dataset provides monthly breakdowns of dental courses of treatment by:
- adults/children
- treatment band
- national, NHS region, and Integrated Care Board (ICB) geographies
Data is provided by ‘Treatment Month’ – the month a course of treatment is assigned to based on the date of completion or date of last visit (the date of last visit may be the treatment acceptance date).
As FP17s can be submitted or amended for treatment months after they have originally been reported, data provided for April 2025 to October 2025 should be treated as provisional. Data provided for July 2023 to March 2025 is final.
This dataset allows comparisons of dental activity delivered to be made over time at different geographies.
The dataset can be used to:
- assess delivery of courses of treatment across ICBs
- provide evidence for policy makers, commissioners, and local healthcare teams to support decision making and evaluation
- enable transparency in tracking delivery of dental activity allowing for public accountability
The annual Dental Statistics England Official Statistics publication provides in-depth data and information relating to the delivery of dental services and should be used to understand the broader landscape of general dentistry in England. This data set is produced using the same methodologies and criteria as the official statistics, however there are small differences due to the way that some contracts are mapped to commissioning organisations over time.
Dental contract level information is also published monthly on the NHSBSA Open Data Portal and should be used if you require more granular information. However, the English Contractor Monthly General Dental Activity excludes activity relating to foundation dentists and contracts not paid by the NHSBSA.
The NHSBSA is not responsible for access to NHS dental treatment.

Dataset Details
Data Source
This data is sourced from Compass (Compass went live in February 2016 and is the system that commissioners, providers and performers need to use to access and administer their relevant NHS Dental Services information).
This data was extracted from the NHSBSA Data Warehouse on 17th February 2026.
Data Collection
This data is collected by NHS Dental Services, part of the NHSBSA. The majority of the information is collected electronically, and data is made available to us for publication as a by-product of these processes.

Health and Justice Contract Coverage
Data for Health and Justice (prison) contracts is included in national and regional totals, as these contracts are commissioned by regional teams, not ICBs. Health and Justice data has been excluded from the ICB breakdowns, therefore ICB data will not reconcile to the regional or national data.

Data for foundation dentists and dental care practitioners is included within this data set.

Patient Age Determination
A patient's age is determined at the date of acceptance of an FP17.

Data provides a breakdown by adult, children or both.
Children are patients that are aged 17 and under at the date of acceptance for a course of treatment.

‘Other’ Treatment Band Definition
The treatment band of ‘other’ includes courses of treatment with a band of:
- free
- regulation 11 replacement appliance
- domiciliary visits
- treatments with an unknown band
